Our Champions

I knew I had to go BIGGER!!!

Hello Augie’s Quest Family,

My name is Brooke Eby, and I want to share my story with you.

Let’s rewind to 2018. I was 29, working as a tech salesperson in New York City, always on the move. On my way to a work event with colleagues, I noticed something strange; I was struggling to walk, and a few coworkers even pointed out, “You’re limping, Brooke. You might want to get that checked out.”

Thinking it was something minor, because 20-somethings are invincible, I went to the doctor. But one by one, the simple diagnoses were ruled out. Over the next four years, I went through countless tests, until finally, at age 33, I was diagnosed with ALS.

The first few months after that news were a blur. I ate approximately half a million M&Ms, just trying to wrap my head around it. But a shift happened at a friend’s wedding. I showed up using a walker, and while I was embarrassed and wanted to hide in the corner, my best friend encouraged me, saying, “It could be embarrassing, or it could be really fun. Either way, you’ll get a good story out of it.” By the end of the night, the bride was limboing under my walker, and I was giving walker rides across the dance floor.

That night, surrounded by friends and family, I found a new purpose: to raise awareness for ALS. So, I downloaded TikTok and began sharing my story. And then I met more people whose lives were turned upside down because of ALS. I knew I had to go bigger.

That’s how ALStogether came to life. Built on Slack, ALStogether gives ALS patients, caregivers, and families a single place to connect and share. It’s a virtual space with dedicated channels for everything from discussing research to sharing how our days went. This Slack community allows members to reach out anytime, find real-time support, and engage in conversations as easily as chatting with friends.

Living with ALS isn’t easy, but finding people who “get it” has made all the difference for me, and I wanted everyone affected by ALS to have that experience.

ALStogether is my way of making sure no one has to face this journey alone.

Thank you, Augie’s Quest, for helping spread the word. If you or someone you know could benefit from joining our Slack community, we’d love to welcome you. ALStogether is here for everyone touched by ALS, so we can face this journey together.

With a big F*** ALS,
Brooke Eby
